The Weather Channel Teams Up with Aaron Neville and The Salvation Army on Holiday CD
ATLANTA (November 5, 2009) - The Weather Channel (TWC), in partnership with singing legend Aaron Neville and The Salvation Army, announces the release of "Holiday Party," a holiday music compilation album. The CD features the single "Please Don't Forget" by Aaron Neville, and a portion of the proceeds from the single and the CD, both available by download from theweatherchannelmusic.com, will be donated to The Salvation Army's Red Kettle Christmas Campaign.
"We are very excited to expand The Weather Channel music collection with the release of our new holiday album, 'Holiday Party,'" said Robyn Coward, director of licensing and merchandising for The Weather Channel. "The timing of this campaign aligns perfectly with the holiday season and the recent launch of theweatherchannelmusic.com."
"Holiday Party" features a mix of upbeat and festive music. Along with classic holiday songs, the CD offers the all-new single "Please Don't Forget" by Grammy Award-winner Aaron Neville. A song about true joy and peace received from helping others, "Please Don't Forget" follows in the tradition of the "original" Salvation Army Christmas song "Silver Bells," which also is performed by a Salvation Army brass band on the CD. "Silver Bells," inspired by the iconic Salvation Army bell ringer, was originally recorded by Bing Crosby in 1950.
Neville also lends his voice to the holiday clasics "White Christmas" and "Go Tell It On The Mountain" from his album "Christmas Prayer." "Holiday Party" features other well known artists such as Ray Charles, The Beach Boys, Amy Grant, The Salvation Army Ensemble, One Approved, Matt Belsante and Blessing. Classic holiday songs include "All I want For Christmas," "Little Drummer Boy," The Charlie Brown Christmas Theme and others.
"One of the sounds I love about the holiday season is the 'ring ring' of Salvation Army bells at Red Kettles. It brings hope, happiness and awareness to so many around the U.S. It's such an honor to partner with The Salvation Army and The Weather Channel on this holiday collection and new song. 'Please Don't forget' is just a reminder to reach out a hand to our brothers and sisters who may need a little extra help this holiday season and every season for generations to come," said Aaron Neville.
Aaron Neville will appear for the special premiere of "Please Don't Forget" Friday, Nov. 20 on Wake Up with Al, The Weather Channel morning show hosted by Al Roker and Stephanie Abrams. The Weather Channel, Aaron Neville and The Salvation Army also have joined forces to promote the single and the CD. TWC will support the effort from weather.com as well as on air. The single "Please Don't Forget" - available exclusively on the "Holiday Party" CD - and the full CD will both be available for purchase and download from theweatherchannelmusic.com. "Holiday Party" will be distributed to the retail market via EMICMG Distribution, a subsidiary of EMI Music. The CD will be available at major retailers such as Wal-Mart.
"The Salvation Army has a strong musical tradition so this partnership is a natural fit," said Major George Hood, national community relations and development secretary for The Salvation Army. "This is an excellent way for people to help their neighbors in need by supporting the Red Kettle Campaign while enjoying some great music in the process."
The release of "Holiday Party" follows past CD release successes from The Weather Channel. In December 2007, TWC's debut album "The Weather Channel Presents...Smooth Jazz" hit number one on Billboard's current contemporary jazz charts and became a top-20 seller on Amazon.com. In spring 2008, a second "Smooth Jazz II" compilation was on Amazon.com's Top-40 list for several weeks. Both CDs are available at www.weather.com/store, Best Buy and Amazon.com.

(October 7, 2009) - The Kroger Company, in partnership with The Salvation Army and WSB-TV Channel 2, raised $117,060 to help victims of Metro Atlanta's recent flood.
Throughout the Round Up campaign, Kroger customers were able to easily contribute to recovery efforts by simply rounding up their grocery bills to the next dollar.

The Salvation Army Goes Paperless: Releases First-Ever All Online Annual Report
Alexandria, VA (September 29, 2009) - For the first time ever, The Salvation Army released its 2009 National Annual Report exclusively online covering the 2008 fiscal year (October 1, 2007 to September 30, 2008). The annual report's digital format allows The Salvation Army to broadly communicate with its donors in a way it has never done before. The layout uses interactive financial charts, and emotional video testimonials from clients and Salvation Army officers and staff to shed light on the impact of the nonprofit organization throughout the year.
"The digital annual report captures the work of The Salvation Army - and the stories of those we help - in a way that a paper report can't," said Major George Hood, National Community Relations and Development Secretary for The Salvation Army. "As more and more donors move online to learn about charities, this is one more way to quickly and easily learn about how charitable contributions are being used to help those in need."
By developing an online annual report, The Salvation Army has done away with thousands of paper annual reports that will no longer be printed. The environmentally friendly shift to a digital format lets the Army reach a broad audience, while reducing the need to produce and distribute the printed version by mail every year. Users will still have the ability to print a formatted version of the document from their own computers.
The report also demonstrates The Salvation Army's forward-thinking approach to communicating with the public by targeting a new and younger audience of Internet users. With an extremely progressive platform that highlights the Army's critical work over the past year, the report combines the best aspects online communication.
"I have never seen an annual report from any organization that connects with people on an emotional level like this one does, yet also has the ability to reach such a wide group of Salvation Army supporters." said Major Hood. "The annual report is a testimonial that the Army will provide services at the point of need and will work with our supporters and help our clients through these challenging times just as we have for nearly 130 years."
The report was created and produced by Dallas-based independent advertising agency The Richards Group and the agency's digital arm, Click Here. The two companies developed an easy-to-navigate story that allows the online audience to actively connect with The Salvation Army according to their specific interests in the organization . The report also includes video message about the Army's overall vision and work, told through the eyes of National Commander Israel Gaither and clients' personal testimonials.
In particular, the "Our Stories" section of the annual report tells compelling personal stories of Salvation Army clients through video testimonials. The individuals and families included received help and guidance through a variety of Salvation Army programs nationwide. Programs featured in the stories include Families and Individuals in Transitional Housing (F.A.I.T.H.) in Sarasota, FL; Caring Partners Adult Day in Rochester, MN; and Keep a Job in Wilmington, DE. Each video provides the audience with a first-hand account of how The Salvation Army can change someone's life in a year for the better.
"The interactive format engages and educates current and potential donors in a more meaningful way," said Stan Richards, founder and principal of The Richards Group. "Audiences can now actually see where and how The Salvation Army is investing its time and money and hear directly from the beneficiaries."
The Salvation Army will continue to produce the digital annual report for future fiscal years, providing new financial information as well as new testimonials from those served by the organization. The Salvation Army's annual report is available at annualreport.salvationarmyusa.org.

THE SALVATION ARMY IN MYANMAR (BURMA) RESPONDS TO CYCLONE NARGIS
May 6, 2008
The Salvation Army in Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) is responding to the devastation caused by Cyclone Nargis, which is thought to have killed more than 20,000 people. Communications to Myanmar have been severely affected but news has been received that local Salvationists are helping victims in the Yangon area.
Although occasionally the victim of flooding in the rainy seasons, the country of Myanmar has not, on the whole, been subject to cyclones. Because of this, the infrastructure is not in place to deal with such a disaster. News bulletins1/2report an escalating death toll and many thousands of people are now homeless as a result of the cyclone and without access to clean water.
Part of the great difficulties was damage to property:the roof was torn off the Regional Headquarters building. Members of The Salvation Army in Yangon have been providing cooked meals from their own store of food for those who are desperately in need. Local Salvationists seek to assist as many people as possible although access to many areas is nearly impossible. In some places communication networks are completely unavailable.
Colonel David Bringans, leader of The Salvation Army in Singapore, Malaysia and Myanmar, says: "Our people in Myanmar are already dispensing rice and other relief to the people. Both of our two children's homes in Yangon have artesian wells and they are running the generators to pump water from these almost non-stop. The public are therefore able to come to our compounds to receive clean water at this time."
There has already been widespread support from many countries in terms of financial assistance and, as access and communications improve, aid will be sent directly to those receiving assistance.
A Salvation Army assessment team from the region is en route to the affected area and will make plans for the most immediate needs to be met first. There is no doubt that this tragedy has caused much suffering and that it will take a long time for Myanmar and the population to recover from the effects of this unexpected devastation.
Major Mike Caffull, Field Operations Officer of International Emergency Services, says: 'Early indications suggest that Salvationists in Myanmar are responding magnificently to the disaster that has hit their country, but it is also clear that there is going to be a great need for substantial financial support to enable an appropriate response to the damage and suffering that is already being experienced and which is likely to continue for some time.

The Georgia Division is Doing The Most Good
The Georgia Division, commanded by Major William Mockabee, is committed to more than numerical growth, but also growth in outcomes of its programs. Mockabee, and his wife Debra, have traveled the division to note the strengths of worship services and discipleship programs that are planned and executed with excellence and attended by many. "We believe this to be a result of Salvation Army officers who have committed themselves to doing evangelism and preaching holiness from the pulpit," said Mockabee. He added that the strong soldiery of the division is what allows the officers to stay focused on the task at hand preaching the Word of God.
When the Mockabees were appointed to command DHQ, their priority was helping each corps identify outcomes for their programs to ensure that the division is doing the most good with the lives of people who come through the doors. "It is our desire to keep people when they come in the front door so that they can be part of this wonderful Salvation Army fellowship," he said.
One of the strategies for doing that has come from the staff at Divisional Headquarters. Under Major Mockabee's leadership, the staff has developed a four-page outcome measurement program that allows the divisional calendar to only be filled with programs that uphold the territorial mission statement and implementation of Commissioner Feener's four priorities. From Youth Councils to Family Camp, every program event must develop outcomes that will be achieved when that event is finished. "Each person who is responsible for those programs will have to establish how those outcomes fit in with the four territorial priorities," added Mockabee.
Recently, Mockabee met a young woman whom he assumed had been raised in a middle-class Salvation Army background. She was well-dressed and well-spoken. However, when she told him that she had come to the Army through a shelter, it surprised him. She and her mother had been homeless and began attending worship services at a corps near the shelter where they sought help. The woman said she was transformed from being an angry, rebellious young person into an active corps leader and, then, to her current role a Salvation Army officer of the Georgia Division.
"In my opinion," said Mockabee, this is a Salvation Army story at its best. This exemplified the four priorities before they were given to us through the ministry and character traits of the local officers being compassionate, passionate, trustworthy, uplifting and brave. The Georgia Division is thriving because of great leadership in the past and the commitment of officers, local officers and divisional staff who have committed themselves to The Salvation Army ministry.
