Salvation Army Georgia Division Becomes Steward of $10 Million to Help the Homeless
This stimulus funding was made possible through the Recovery Act signed into law by President Barack Obama on February 17, 2009.
(Norcross, GA) September 5, 2009 – The State of Georgia and the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) have awarded The Salvation Army Georgia Division a two-year stimulus grant worth $10 million to address the increase in homelessness created by the prolonged economic crisis. The State and DCA targeted The Salvation Army because of its effectiveness in serving Georgia since 1890. Both agencies recognize The Salvation Army as an international charity which has earned the trust of communities worldwide.
Through the Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program (HPRP), recipients in 91 out of 159 Georgia counties must meet criteria established by the grant to qualify for rent and utility assistance. The Army has maintained it would not close its doors to anyone in need. This stimulus funding allows the Army to make good on its word by serving additional persons who have lost their homes and are rebuilding their lives.
Major William Mockabee, Georgia Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army said, “We are thrilled and honored the State of Georgia has chosen The Salvation Army to be one of the seven recipients awarded out of 19 applicants for an available $18 million so that we may continue our mission of vast outreach to citizens who are hurting and struggling. Funds from the grant will not be used for support or administrative costs associated with our normal operations so we can directly apply funds to help those in need.”
The Salvation Army will exhaust the $10 million stimulus funding within the two-year grant cycle. According to Major Mockabee, “ The stimulus grant is a great complement to the emergency services network The Salvation Army already provides across Georgia through Project SHARE. These additional funds will allow us to respond to more Georgians in crisis more effectively during one of the most challenging and critical periods of need in recent history. For nearly 25 years, SHARE's primary partner, Georgia Power, and other donor utilities have made an extraordinary commitment to collect and contribute millions of dollars annually for Project SHARE's work. Later this year and beyond the two-year grant period, their special efforts and the always generous support of their donor customers will be more important than ever to help strengthen our permanent, core SHARE program.”
